The Hamline-Midway area was a wide stretch of prairie that farmers settled in the 1850’s. The neighborhood did not begin to develop as a residential area until after the establishment of Hamline University in 1880. The first street car line was completed in 1890 connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul via University Avenue. The completion of the Minnesota Transfer Railroad in 1883, used to haul livestock and freight along with convenient public transportation propelled the growth of the Hamline-Midway neighborhood.
Today the Hamline-Midway neighborhood is a mix of residential, commercial, and light industrial. In addition to Hamline University, the area includes several public and private elementary schools and public parks. The completion of the Central Corridor light rail along University Avenue will once again link Saint Paul to Minneapolis.
Here are a few buildings to note as examples of unique architectural style.
- The Orin O. Whited house (1887) at 1538 Engelwood is one of the oldest Victorian houses in the neighborhood. It is constructed of brick, instead of wood frame.
- The John J. Dewey house (1889) at 1684 W. Van Buren is a Queen Anne with an ornate open porch.
- The Lena Howard house (1926) at 1672 Blair is a Pueblo/Mission Revival
- The Knox Presbyterian Church (1912-1914) at 1536 Minnehaha Avenue is a church built in the Prairie Style as opposed to the more common Late Gothic Revival Style of the Hamline Methodist Episcopal church at 1514 Engelwood Avenue.
